Nondormant dreaming

Installation by S.Yiyao Chao and Koel Chu

29/09 – 6/11/24
Group exhibition curated by Helena Halim at Hart Hause Hong Kong

S. Yi Yao Chao + Koel Chu presents Nondormant Dreaming (2024), an installation that
simulates the resting place for an archivist who is sorting through their family photographs
and documents, attempting to salvage what is left before they disintegrate. On the floor is a ceramic pillow-like-pebble on a tatami mat. While resting one’s head, the whispers of dreams
can be heard. Dreams carry traces of our memories, and dream curios are found in the
suitcase by the mat. “On the window, a crochet hanging rope dangles like a watermelon vine.
Spare buttons germinate around a portrait of the archivist’s grandma, taken from a travel
document she had when she visited Hong Kong from Macau. Outside the patio is unfired
clay—just humid enough for moss but not dreams to spread,” write the artists. The apartment
is damp, and the archivist takes a nap.

Writing as Method

The collective exhibition presents a series of artworks in response to each other, revealing ten artists’ chaotic yet intertwined experimental processes. By juxtaposing archives of notes and drafts with newly developed artworks, the exhibition attempts to evoke the infinite possibilities of writing as a method, loosen the imagination of artworks from scratch, share experimental collaborative practices with the public, and stimulate more moments of communication and resonance.

一個修坯修壞了的盤子,中間留下空心圓形。一首飛蛾的頌歌,記錄一隻飛蛾曾在某夜飛進房間。

Hou Lam Tsui was trimming a plate too thin and left the rim, which looked like an ode to a moth that flew to Sam Chao’'s living room one night.
