clay pot with congee glue

Lesley commissioned me to make a donabe, she was very into hosting and cooking with these Dobabe, Japanese clay pots. After I made the first one, she also gifted me one, and asked for a double lid donabe. I looked into Kalinga pots in Philippines and in Hong Kong, we have cantonese claypot rice 煲仔飯 (bāozǎifàn).

In throwing, the pot is made like a teapot all the pieces have to be done at once, its like 3 bowls and the lid and ears are sculpted.

'Because donabe’s clay body is porous, you must first season donabe by making rice porridge in it. As the starch of the thick gluelike porridge fills the tiny pores of the clay, it strengthens the body and helps prevent possible leaks and cracks during cooking. This process also creates a barrier to keep aromas from the food from penetrating the pores of the clay. It’s a one-time step that will make your donabe last for a long time.'1

Cooking tips: bāozǎifàn, is more oil based and to keep the rice from sticking friends use oil and garlic. For Kalinga's, they cover the base with banana leaves.  kalinga crack pots are also used to roast coffee beans.2 For bāozǎifàn, there are metal grips to keep the pot in place

Mr. Zhu lent me a mini chinese herbal medicine pot, originally used for boiling. I made two and let him choose the better replica as a gift. His feedback was the stout was too straight so it will be hard on the wrist to pour, the original is made to be slightly slanted. the teapot lid should also have a wider disc so when your thumb presses on the lid it won’t slide off and a better seal for the liquid content. An improvement from it’s original is the teapot holder tip, as it is taller and easier to hold.

blue matte glaze not a very smooth drip because holes for spout is too sparce, a little heavy, the distance between spout and lid/top is too short causing  water to spill.
